Table Four

On Saturday at two the bus stopped at Sam's door. At the hotel everything was white: the flowers, the hall, the big cake with his name. A boy of seven held a sign over his head: THANK YOU, SAM. Aunt Kate sat at table two with her apples and was happy. After the food Sam stood up and read his speech. At the last line he stopped and said the truth: "I am not Sam Brown." "Three weeks ago somebody wrote to the wrong number, and here I am." A hundred people were quiet. Then Aunt Kate stood up too. "The apples were very good," she said, and everybody began to laugh. Nina gave Sam a glass of wine and said that table four is his for ever. Late in the evening a message came from a number he now knew well. "Hello, I am back from the sea!" "I have read the reviews about my work, and this was the best wedding of my life." "In June I have three more weddings, and I am going to the sea again." "Your number is on my website now."
