Marcus agreed to meet her at the community center after hours, in the same room where the fundraiser photograph had been taken years earlier. He looked older under the harsh light, and he did not pretend to be surprised by her questions.

"The seven thousand dollars came from the Elm Street budget," he admitted, "and I moved it here, to the center, before the city could cut the after-school program in this year's budget review. If I had asked the council for permission, they would have said no, and forty children would have lost the only safe place they have after three o'clock."
