Nora did not sleep well that night. She kept thinking of Marcus Reyes, not as a name on a contract but as the man who used to sit at her family's kitchen table when she was eleven, the year her father was too sick to work. He had gotten her mother a job at the community center, had driven Nora to school on the mornings her mother couldn't, and had written the recommendation letter that got Nora her first job at the Gazette.

She found an old photograph in a drawer: her father, thinner than she remembered, standing beside Marcus outside the Elm Street Community Center on the day it reopened after a fire. Marcus had led the fundraiser that rebuilt it.
