Catalogue It Quietly

Nora took the deed to the director on a Thursday morning, because putting it off any longer had started to feel like a decision in itself, one she hadn't consciously agreed to make. She laid out everything: the missing accession, Ruth Hale's note from 1978, Daniel's silence, the rejected compensation claim, the Voss Foundation's name on the new roof.
The director read the deed twice, slowly, the way a person reads something they suspect they may already know. "Thank you for bringing this to me," she said at last, in a tone so carefully level that Nora couldn't tell whether it meant relief, or something closer to disappointment that the matter hadn't stayed buried a little longer. "Catalogue it under its proper number. Record its origin accurately. We don't make it public, and we don't hide it either — anyone with a legitimate research reason will be able to request it, the same as any other document in this building."
