The handwriting in the margin had been troubling Nora since the first night, and it was pure stubbornness, not method, that finally placed it: a duty log from the 1970s, signed off in the same tight, careful hand, by "the clerk on duty." The name beside the signature was Ruth Hale. Daniel's mother had worked in this building thirty years before he did.

Nora laid the two pages side by side on his desk without a word. Daniel looked at them for a long moment, and something in him seemed to give way, quietly, the way old paper gives way along a fold that has weakened over the years.
